What People Are Saying About TVA & Project Viper

  • “Progress is not what people are opposed to or TVA expanding to better serve the region or prevent terrorism but the taking of property from individuals by eminent domain with little or no discussion of the plan or appropriate compensation. At the same time destroying the landscape and farmland to access their property without advanced discussion or alternatives.”

  • “TVA has been around for about 80 years. They should have acquired any land that they will need for the foreseeable future long ago. Long term planning is a must for large utilities. Something is rotten in Georgetown.”

  •  “Hard to believe that in the entire 7 state TVA service area the only and best location for this facility is Georgetown, Tn. Why was the Bellefonte property not considered before TVA basically gave the property away. This project has a bad smell.”

  • “Why not put in Oak Ridge where they already have secure federal facilities close to TVAs corporate offices.”

  • “Sounds like Oak Ridge all over again.”

  • “This all started with TVA's secrecy and initial deception about the project in Georgetown. It was about TVA being transparent. We will continue to ask that TVA be more forthcoming with details of any kind. And besides, I think the taxpayers would benefit from looking at more detail about how TVA spends money.”

  •  “The New World Order is HARD AT WORK.”

  • “We live a mile from Gunstocker Creek on Hwy 58. We didn't receive a notice even of the meeting. We were not aware of any of this until someone who lives in Cleveland asked us about it. Right in our back door. TVA definitely could be more open and transparent.”

  • “The government, and don't kid yourself, TVA is the government, always does a dog and pony show for the "concerned citizens and the affected." Handshakes, toothy smiles and nodding heads. They have a plan, a large expensive plan. Hundreds of people and billions of dollars are involved. We the people are but gnats in front of a speeding car. A few, a very few, will see compensation. Maybe, $10 to the dollar.”

  • “They’re going to do whatever they want .... get over it.”

  • I personally think TVA should be more transparent. I know nothing of this but what I read here and in a newspaper.

  •  “Someone should investigate the motivation behind the TVA move, bet it's related to a shady development deal for its downtown property like they did years ago with land swap at Nickajack. Congress should investigate and force them into Oak Ridge facility where infrastructure exist. The Georgetown move looks like a local upper management decision to keep themselves in driving distance to their job while destroying our rural countryside.”

  • “Are they going to pump the wastewater into the Hiwassee or Tennessee River?”

  • “TVA has known about this project for years and has been planning the taking of lands and the future of Georgetown, without the people of Georgetown knowing anything about this. What is you were improving your farm and planning for the future, and the TVA was planning in secret for years to damage your farm. You would be mad, too.”

  • “Some of us moved to this area because of the rural setting. My wife and I relocated here to get away from the urban sprawl occurring in Ooltewah. I am not happy at all about this “growth.”

  • “I was brought up in this area and I agree with the growth. We need it. This area is big enough for a rural area with a few businesses also. More jobs at home, less drugs.”

  • “We also need jobs for locals and infrastructure support for sewers and road improvements to handle the growth. We need planning and respect for the rural aspects of the community.”

  • “Then, I wonder if you would feel differently if it was your land. Eminent domain is nothing but “legal” theft for the greater good. If TVA wants the property, let them pay for it. And I don’t mean fair market value. It’s not fair if the owner doesn’t want to sell. Let them look for properties that the owners are willing to sell.”

  • “I would love to see how many of these people advocating for eminent domain would still be so gung-ho for it if it was THEIR property being stolen by the government. Don't give me that crap about "it's good for the many." If it's so good for the many, why not volunteer to let them take your house and land? I don't even own land in that area, so I really have no dog in the fight, other than the fact that government overreach is wrong, eminent domain is stealing and the government should have absolutely no say in anyone’s private property!”

  • “I don't live far, and I am concerned about all if it...way too many unknowns. I'd like to know more, more and more maybe TVA can set up a 3D model of the end product and have it on display for all to go see at the next INFORMATIVE meeting. We need a bigger meeting place also.”

  • “My family and I just moved here from Pennsylvania. Back home our family and our neighbors had property taken by eminent domain. To put a four-lane highway in. Our farm and our neighbors’ farms were our lively hood. What land they couldn't take from us got landlocked, so we couldn't use it either. A highway that could’ve been expanded beside the older route 219. There was no need to take someone’s property that we used to survive on. So, I don't know what world you live in but the benefits of the 4-lane road will not help the growth of rural Somerset County in Pennsylvania. But it took farmland that was feeding our families.  No one has the right to take anyone’s property. Then we move to Decatur bought a piece of land they tell us our new home had to be so far away from electric lines. So yes, the power lines do affect your property. And a electric line there putting will affect their use of their land. And highway 58 is already a dangerous road for traffic accidents…2 little kids in our daughters’ class at Meigs South Elementary School lost their parents in separate accidents so everything needs to be accounted for.”

  • “What growth do we need? What businesses do we need? We are 15 minutes to Cleveland and 20 minutes to Chattanooga. We already have a grocery store, dollar general, gas station. I moved out here because it wasn’t overdeveloped. I NEED peace when I go home.”

  • “Remember when TVA built the "little" town on the Ocoee? Where is it now?”

  • “The 5th Amendment to the Constitution protects private property. whether in the stone age of America or 2018. Through the years, it is pretty clear TVA has gotten very casual in its approach to taking private property. Google "eminent domain and TVA" and read some of the stories. Private property rights are IMPORTANT.”

  • “The impact of 200+ plus drivers on highways 58 and 60 will put a huge amount of stress on the roads and residents they pass. Traffic accidents are already numerous in those roads, but you know there will be many more. Should the state decide to build a four lane, a lot of people will lose their homes. All because the TVA wants to go rural.”

  • “If TVA is involved you can count on two things.
    1. You are being lied to.
    2. You are being screwed over.”

  • “What if it was THEIR property being stolen by the government. Don't give me that crap about "it's good for the many". If it's so good for the many, why not volunteer to let them take your house and land? I don't even own land in that area, so I really have no dog in the fight, other than the fact that government overreach is wrong, eminent domain is stealing and the government should have absolutely no say in anyone’s private property!”

  • “Higher traffic...more businesses...less farms...I don't like it or agree. I love my farmers and their lands. They help feed us.”
